The
foregoing pages cannot be
called a book. They are only a great many pages of genealogical
information designed to answer that ever intriguing question of
"who am I and where did I come from?" It is a cumulative
effort, a result of many years of hard word researching the family
history. It was never intended to be an intellectual dissertation
or a literary success.
I did
not seek to make it grammatically correct-the punctuation is poor, the
tenses change in the middle of a sentence, the sentence structure is
very haphazard, the style or format is ragged...but I did gather the
facts on our ancestors that I think will be as interesting to you as it
is to me. These people were not just names, but real flesh and
blood human beings who lived and died and who had the same emotions as
you and I. I hope you will feel the way I do...that without the
genes contributed by all of these long-dead forefathers we would not be
what we are today.
I could not
have attempted even this endeavor with the help and support of my
family. My husband, Archie, furnished a typewriter, paper,
printing equipment, advice and encouragement. Our son, Bill, who
always said, "Who wants to read that junk," nevertheless took
time to photograph old documents and pictures for me to study. And
thanks to Cindy who was the real inspiration. She was the one who
asked about her ancestors when she needed a topic for a school essay and
started the whole thing. Without Tim, who was my "Tombstone
Territory" (as he called it) companion, I would have been unable to
visit many of the lost, overgrown, unseen cemeteries he found for
me. He also read microfilm and he was always willing and ready to
change typewriter ribbons for me.
I hope each
one of you will want to learn more about the progenitors of our family
and that you will start your own research of the family tree for
additional information. There is a great amount of documented
evidence to be found, if you have the time and interest to uncover it.
It has been
said by another genealogist, "Many people are not interested in
history, even their own; others flaunt their pedigrees as marks of
social distinction, a snobbery thoughtful people despise, but I hope you
will be among those who will respond in some way to this story of your
forefathers."
Happy ancestor hunting!
